If you investigate Oxford beyond the university itself you will discover a wide range of interesting historic sites. These includes the famous Oxford Castle whose origins date back to 1071. Next to it is the mysterious mound.
You can also see the Oxford Canal, one of the earliest canals in England and the first to link the Midlands to London. It was started in 1769 in Coventry and reached Oxford in 1789.
An informative way to explore Oxford is to take an Oxford Walking Tour or an open bus tour.
Slightly outside central Oxford can be found the village of Iffley which is nice to walk around and includes Iffley Church which was built in 1170 and has been described as the best Romanesque church in England. Check the church’s website for more information about the building and some of its history.
